We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you know why? Well, from an Oriental Medicine point of view, it is because of something called the Organ Clock.
Every 2 hours of the day, your Qi is flowing more strongly through one of the 12 meridians. The meridian/organ system associated with 7-9am is the Stomach! Therefor, at that time, you stomach is going to do it’s best work of the day, and it’s really raring to go! It wants food, and if you don’t give it any, it’s going “Hey! What about me! This is my time!”
Bottom line, it’s important to eat breakfast every day. You don’t want to let this slide. So, here’s a few ideas for making breakfast part of your daily routine:
Porridge is always a great choice: My favourites are Organic Rolled Oats or Brown Rice Porridge, there’s also quite a few good ones from Bob’s Redmill, like “Mighty Tasty Cereal”. I usually add some dried organic fruit or nuts, as well as hemp hearts. Congee (Rice Porridge) is also amazing for breakfast as it’s so healthy and easy on the digestion. You can add herbs to congee to treat whatever might be out of balance. I prefer savoury congee’s in the morning, with slices of meat, vegetables, and herbs.
Eggs are also great, it’s good to get that protein punch in in the morning, hard boiled or poached eggs are healthier choices than eggs fried in oil.
Do you find it hard to fit breakfast in on busy mornings?
Here’s an idea you can try. I make my own instant oatmeal to keep at work for really early mornings when I might not get my act together enough to make porridge at home. I don’t recommend buying instant oatmeal as even the organic stuff is loaded with sugar. If you make your own, you can use dried fruit and a little cinnamon as sweeteners instead!
My current batch is made with:
Organic quick oats
Go Ji Berries
Slivered almonds
Walnuts
Dried Cherries
Cinnamon
Hemp Hearts
The photo above shows the containers and size I generally make. I keep a couple of these little containers in my desk at work. If the need arises, I just pour boiling water over it, and in 2 or 3 minutes it’s good to go.
A few other quick notes!
I just want to talk here about my personal morning routine. This really works for me, and I encourage others to try some of these products.
I start every day with VegeGreens. It’s a green food supplement from Progressive that is just fantastic. I literally get up out of bed, walk straight to the fridge, and prepare this shake before I do anything else in the morning. If you live in Victoria, Popeye’s is the cheapest place in town to get this product, and I have some 10% off coupons, so hit me up for one the next time you’re in the clinic.
About 20 minutes after I take the VegeGreens, I take an egg based protein powder (I don’t eat dairy products) with 2 tsp of NutriSea added to it. NutriSea is a high quality Omega 3 product that is good for general health, cardiovascular function, brain function, and the development of brain, eyes and nervous system. It is also anti-inflammatory, so eating this in the morning will help with joints and any body pain all day. Also, it comes in a lemon flavour that tastes delicious in my protein shake :)
I follow this up with a whole grain organic porridge of some kind.
The only time I don’t take the protein powder is if I’m having eggs or another protein rich food for breakfast.
Any Questions? Just ask :)
