There are many things I love about going to the market, but a couple of the top reasons are this:

Eating seasonally is the best way to eat. In Oriental Medicine, there is a lot of emphasis put on living in harmony with nature. We feel that the body is a microcosm of the world around us, so eating what grows locally and in season is the best way to be in tune with the natural world around us. Local markets are an amazing “cheat sheet” for how to eat right for optimum health.

Secondly, I love the varieties of foods you can get at a market! If you go to the grocery store, chances are, they will have very limited variety of vegetables. For example, I’m very fond of kale. There are countless varieties of Kale available as seed to grow in your garden! But the variety is always lacking at the grocery store, they usually only have 1 type, sometimes 2 types if your grocery store has a good organic section. The same goes for every vegetable out there. The grocery store varieties are generally only those that keep for long periods of time, or those that have proven to be high yielding or whatever. You’re missing out on such great flavour by limiting yourself to these few grocery store items.

Well, I hope you all find time to get out to some of these markets and support your local growers! You’re body will thank you for it :D
